Learning that a Tesla, loaded with lithium-ion batteries, also has an old-school 12V battery, which often surprises people. But it does, and like other cars, it’s a part of the car that dies every few years, especially in blazing hot places like Florida where I live.

I was actually informing my wife of this yesterday, as we were driving from an auto shop that replaces a 12V battery in the parking lot of a shopping center and was leaving at the right time. Like almost everyone who learns it, it was surprising that our Tesla Model 3 has a huge 12V battery, in addition to the giant one we charge a few times a week (for $ 0).

The shocker that Tesla has a 12V battery often accompanies the shocker that one day the battery will only be on you and you will die. Of course, this is not unique to Tesla. This happens every day in gasoline-powered cars, and it happened in my first few days with the BMW i3 I used a few years ago. Simply put: 12V batteries suck.

From time to time, I have seen Tesla fans propose that Tesla should implement a better warning system regarding 12V battery deaths. Today, one such owner made such a request (well, it was said more like a demand), and Tesla’s chief engineer Elon Musk replied on Twitter that he completely agreed. Perhaps he was searching for such a request, or was it just lucky he saw it, as he also had an update to share with Tesla fans: “major software improvements” soon extending 12V battery life Are going to be applied to “& more.” Presumably, part of the “more” is a better warning system when your 12V battery is passing its last electrons.

So, the owners of about 1 million Tesla vehicles get out there and many people who join the Tesla family in the coming years can be happy that the 12V battery will last longer in our Tesla and the upcoming software. Will bring other improvements to the update. Nevertheless, it is a wonder that Tesla vehicles get a lot of useful over-the-air software updates. One of the most enjoyable things about owning a Tesla is because your car is constantly getting better. According to some, this is actually part of a completely new business model. Whether you go that far or not, this is definitely a unique advantage in the automotive world, and one that makes you feel like you are driving something other than a simple car.
